Annually, 10,000 Australian males are diagnosed with prostate cancer and of this number, 2600 will die from the disease. Whilst the majority of these men are more than 50 years of age, some males are younger than 50. The treatment for prostate cancer often leaves males with reduced testosterone levels and damage to nerve and blood vessels that control erections. More specifically the treatment affects your ability to get an erection, desire to have sex, ability to ejaculate and orgasm and can make you infertile.
So for those of you males who like to have sex, the best thing to fight prostate cancer is not treatment but prevention. To prevent prostate cancer the annual services at your GP is a must, but are have you looked at the amount of lycopene you’re eating?
Lycopene is a fat soluble carotenoid which we must get from our diet as our body cannot produce it. This carotenoid is a powerful antioxidant which helps to reduce cell damage by fighting against free radicals. Lycopene imparts the red colour in tomatoes and is also found in rosenip, watermelon, guava and pink grapefruit. When you eat lycopene it is deposited into your lungs, liver, prostate gland, colon and skin. And research shows that lycopene in tomatoes can more easily be absorbed if it is processed into juice, sauce or paste.
A 6 year study looking at the diet of 47,00 men has shown that lycopene consumption is inversely associated with the incidence of different types of cancer including prostate, lung, bladder, cervical and skin. This means the more lycopene you eat, the less chance you have of getting cancers including prostate. Guy’s are you getting enough lycopene?
